PAR Artist Patrick McDonough at Socrates Sculpture Park

Patrick McDonough writes home from the Public Art Residency:

“It is hard to believe that I am almost half way through my time here at Socrates! This is truly an inspiring site to come to every day: whether it’s the projects of the other 20 artists working in the studio towards their own September exhibition, the amazing breadth and scope of users of the park for everything from picnics to low budget movie shoots to gym-less exercise to serious art viewing, or the palpable sense of spirit and generosity that seems to float just above the whole proceedings.

On my own project’s front, I am happy to be continuing my awning projects series with an eye towards the notion of awnings without buildings (as philosophically untrue that might be). From my first days at the park I have refined this concept into an intervention-like approach, utilizing existing infrastructures in the project space such as the waterfront and plinths (and maybe even the public programs!) as supports for these building-less awnings.

Lots to do before installation, but I am really looking forward to the show! Thanks to everyone at WPA and Socrates for their support.

Best,
Patrick”
