50 Years of Trailblazing Art in DC: The Third Decade (1995-2004)
1995 – Facing financial instability due to a national recession that has adversely impacted support for non-profits, WPA transfers its operations to a new non-profit corporation: Washington Project for the Arts\Corcoran (WPA\C), housed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and legally accountable to its Board of Trustees.
1997
- May 30 – July 26: First edition of “OPTIONS”, WPA’s biennial exhibition of emerging and unrepresented artists from the DMV.
1999
- June 17 – September 25: “SiteProjectsDC” was an exhibition of site-specific art for public spaces exploring the theme of “presence” by responding to the history, current use, and context of the site within the urban landscape.
2002 – WPA\C publishes its first Artist Directory, a guide to Washington area artists.
2004
- May 13 – June 4: “Anonymous,” a chain curation exhibition in which 10 invited artists curate an additional 9 artists each, all of whom are presented anonymously. Their work sells for $500 apiece.
