The Mud Dance

WPA was excited to invite everyone to the Mud Dance, August 23rd from 12pm to 10pm, to eat good food, dance, meet other members of the SWDC community, listen to great music, and in-between combine materials to create a mixture of mud, straw, and recycled materials (called “cob”) that formed benches designed by artist Michael Koliner!

The cob benches made during the event were part of Lance Fung’s larger public park installation for the 5×5 Project called Nonuments, which seeks to challenge our community’s understanding of the word “monument” and reflect on ideas, peoples and personal struggles that are not the subjects of the traditional monuments that occupy our city. The cob-seating project seeks to enhance this temporary public space in which transformative interactions can take place.

WPA would like to thank the organizations who partnered with us to help in the success of this event: DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, DC Office of Planning, The 5×5 Project, Community Forklift – Nonprofit Thrift Store For Home Improvement, Fung Collaboratives, Frager’s Hardware, ROMA | Eco-Sustainable Building Technologies, Kendama USA, Safeway and Chapel Valley Landscape Company
